Book Review: “The Vets At Hope Green: Part Three: Too Close To Home by Sheila Norton

Goodreads Synopsis

PART THREE of a serialised novel – a heartwarming and inspiring story about living the simple life and the joy of animals.

Things are finally starting to look up for Sam – a chance at her dream job as a vet, and a new friend (who is a huge animal lover himself – a very important detail!) What more could she ask for?

But a something is eating away at her: her boss Joe is acting strangely around her – he’s definitely hiding something. And having dreamed of being a vet for so long, she cannot afford to put a foot wrong.

When a call to tend to a sick pony comes into the practice, it all strikes too close to home for Sam and Joe. The odds are stacked against her, and she risks losing everything…

Bookworm1102’s Review

Part Three continues where Part Two ended. We find out what happens between Sam and David, and whether Sam’s unborn baby is doing well. However, things are still the same between Sam and Joe Bradley, until she unintentionally upsets Joe’s daughter, Ruby. From this point on, Sam realises that there are more things happening in Joe Bradley’s life than he allows anyone else to know.

Part Three did not disappoint. Sam was as strong willed as ever, and I like her relationship with Izzie. I personally think that Claire and Adam are better off out of Sam’s life, despite the fact that Adam is the father of her child. I thought the scene in the pub was a bit odd and it ended rather abruptly, and I am looking forward to seeing why Joe stormed off like he did. Part Three ended on a huge cliffhanger, and I need to find out what happens in the final part of this series!

Thank you to the publisher, Sheila Norton and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary ebook copy.

I rate this book 4/5 stars!

Book Review: “Diamond Bonds” by Jeff Kish

diamond bond

Diamond Bonds is about a guy named Era and his partner in crime Jem, who come across a kidnapped girl called Di during their travels, and they set on the long journey to take her home, for a reward. Before they know it, they have a bounty on their heads, and are risking their lives for a girl who neither of them knows. Is Di really who she claims she is?

Diamond Bonds captured my attention from start to finish. In the very first chapter, we are introduced to the three main characters, and you get to know their personalities very quickly. At first, I did not like Di, believing she was a whiny teenager. As the story developed, my opinion of her changed, and she became my favourite character. There are so many different lands and different people and they are all described in such detail, I truly felt like I was there, experiencing these things along with Era, Jem and Di.

The book flowed well from beginning to end, and it was fast paced, each chapter had new dangers and new characters. I look forward to finding out what happens in the next book.

Thank you to the author, Jeff Kish, for providing me with a complimentary ebook and audiobook copy.

I rate this book 5/5 stars!

Creating Stories by Hank Quense

Hank, the author of more than twenty books, tells you how to write your story. He believes that stories come from the melding of three elements: getting ideas, story design, and story-telling. Ideas have to come from the author. CREATING STORIES covers the last two.

The book concentrates on developing characters including such rarely discussed requirements such as a dominant reader emotion and the character’s biography.

Plots are also covered in depth and a number of graphics are included to illustrate complex points. Another topic discusses subplots and how to utilize them and how to nest them within the main plot.

A separate chapter discusses the relationship between the plot and the emotional arcs.

Other topics covered are character arcs, scene design, point-of-view, writing voice.

From Chapter 3 of Creating Stories

As you build the characters, you may notice that limitations crop up. A character can’t do what you want him to do because he is too old. An elderly person, for instance, can’t do many things a younger person can do. You are becoming limited in what you, the author, can do and what your characters can do or can not do. These limitations or restrictions will also occur with plotting and motivation. The more the story design develops, the less freedom you and your characters have. As an example, if you build a character’s physical aspects so that he has a serious limp, you can’t have him outrunning the bad guy. Similarly, if your character dropped out of high school, he can’t use the laws of thermodynamics to develop the solution to the plot problem. This is one huge advantage to building a complete biography; it gives you a better understanding of what the character is capable of doing.

A biography for the character serves a dual purpose. Besides providing background information, it allows the author to understand the character and that understanding is vital when dealing with the character in stressful situations.

For a short-story character, I write a few paragraphs of bio material. For the main character in a novel, the bio may run to more than a page. Other novel characters will get less of a bio. The less important the character, the smaller the bio I create.

The strange thing to many new story writers is this: most of the biographical material won’t show up in the story so why bother developing it? The answer is that the bio allows the writer to understand the character and what makes him or her tick. The better the writer knows and understands the character, the better the writer will be able to predict how the character will respond to situations and stimuli.

For instance, suppose someone walks up to your character and punches him in the mouth, or a beautiful woman kisses him. How does your character react to the punch? Does he punch back? Does he walk away? How does the character react to the kiss? Does he get red in the face? Does he kiss her back? Does he develop a stammer? Your detailed biography will guide you in writing the character’s response. If you don’t have the bio material, the character‘s response is really a guess. In addition, the writer will have difficulty keeping the character’s response consistent when other situations occur. Your second guess may be different from your first guess. Believe me, the readers will pick up on it.

There are a number of biographical elements the writer should address.

Family: Are his parents alive? Does the character have any siblings? What is everyone’s age? Are any siblings married? Where did the character grow up? Did the character have any unusual childhood experiences? What were they? Do these experiences affect the character? Is the character’s family stable? Or is it chaotic? How does this affect him?

Education: Schools, degrees, favorite subject?

Career: Jobs, military experience?

Adult experiences: Married? Divorced? Children?

It’s the author’s job to come up with events that will affect the character’s life and outlook.

Chapter 3

Lindsey, 5-25-09

I used to weigh 100 pounds. I don’t think that’s too much for a Labrador Retriever. Well, except that I’m a female. I think the weight was due to my stocky frame and thick neck and chest fur. Oh, who am I kidding? I was fat. I was really fat. But I did exercise a lot in my early years, so some of that weight was muscle. There were two other Labs living with me then―a yellow one and a black one. I’m Chocolate, so the woman called us her Neapolitan Dog Pack―not sure what that meant.

Anyway, I exercised a lot back then. The three of us would run and play in the backyard, and then we’d run away from home and into the woods to chase deer. By the time we finally came home, we were so tired that we slept all day. So, with all of this exercise, why was I fat? I ate all my food and the other two dogs’ food!

The woman and the man—Maria and Lee is what they call each other—already had the other two Labs before I came along. I knew I’d never be Alpha, so my way of trying to find my place in this family was to be the biggest one! Maria used to say, “Lindsey looks like a brown bear.” That was when I was younger. When the other two Labs died, I didn’t have a reason to eat so much. Now, I have a nice figure, just as the vet likes it.

Book Review: “The Vets At Hope Green: Part Two: Follow Your Heart” by Sheila Norton

Goodreads Synopsis

PART TWO of a serialised novel – a heartwarming and inspiring story about living the simple life and the joy of animals.

Working as the receptionist at her local London vets, Sam dreams of escaping to a quieter life in the country. Spending time with her Nana and her lovely but elderly dog Rufus has sparked something within Sam, and all she wants is to start afresh. But her boyfriend Adam is in London, and something tells her that it won’t be an easy conversation.

But then something happens that makes her going-nowhere receptionist job seem much more appealing: she finds a little stray cat called Ebony, in need of love and nurturing back to health. Faced with a dilemma, she must choose between her heart’s desire and the little ball of fluff burrowing her way into Sam’s heart…

Is it possible to have it all?

Bookworm1102’s Review

Having read the first part of this novel, I was looking forward to reading the next part. I could not wait to find out what the characters were going to do next. In Part Two, Sam has to decide what she wants to do about her relationship and about other personal matters.

I enjoyed the second part of this series. I was glad when Sam finally made her choice about Adam, and that she decided to move to Hope Green to be with her Nana. Joe Bradley is still a mystery to me, and I wonder if there is a love triangle hinted at between Sam, Joe and David. I am looking forward to reading Part Three.

Book Review: “Just Like Molly” by Pippa Dowling

‘Just Like Molly’ was born as a Grade 4 school assignment. At just ten years of age Pippa Dowling penned a tale of loneliness, friendship, hope and courage; and it is wise beyond her years.

“I have a friend called Molly, she loves playing games. Molly sleeps under my bed, nobody can see her, only me. One day Molly wasn’t in my room, she wasn’t anywhere. That night I cried”.

This is a beautifully simple book that reassures kids that there is a friend out there perfect for them. A gentle story of friendship and having the courage to make new friends.

Bookworm1102’s Review

Just Like Molly is a book about a girl who has a friend called Molly. They do everything together, until one day, Molly is not there. The girl is upset, and she starts school, making a new friend called Zoe.

This book is a bright and colourful children’s book. The message is reassuring children that there is always someone out there who will want to be friends with them, even though they may not think so. It is a perfect book for parents and children to read together, and to look at the pictures together.

The book is written by Pippa Dowling, who is still currently at school, and for a debut picture book, it is very well written, and well illustrated by Sunshine.

Thank you to Empowering Resources for providing a complimentary e-copy of this book.

About The Author

Horses were one of my first loves, and writing soon followed. As a child, I spent hours writing poems, and short stories (about horses). My parents realized that I was horse-obsessed and decided to buy me one after taking riding lessons for two years. I think they hoped that all of the hard work, and hours spent mucking stalls would help me give up this expensive hobby. They were wrong. Writing is still a passion of mine, although now I primarily write fiction. My first novel, Red Rock, was published in 2010, and big surprise, there are horses in it. My second novel, The Three Month Plan was released August 2013.

Other Loves: My family, yoga, skincare and makeup, sushi, and raising money for pediatric cancer. I have two rescue dogs and would have more if there weren’t zoning restrictions. I’m always trying something new, as I tend to get bored very easily. Thankfully, my love of driving around with the gas light on fuels some excitement. I love novels with happy endings, and am a hopeful romantic. My latest obsession is browsing Netflix, and I can name all 50 states in alphabetical order in under 30 seconds. Do I feel a wager coming on?

Book Two – The Fires Of Hell

2- book 2_360x600

This second instalment starts six weeks after Book one, the Roads of Hell, finished.

The reluctant hero in the making, Duke Woods, The Woodman, has contracted Ebola, otherwise known simply as “The Death”.

The Black Pope is still alive and kicking, unknown to most, and The Woodman has a new friend.

Michelle, a six-year-old girl remains at his side watching and waiting whilst The Death ravages his body. Hannah, the love of his life is not allowed near them in case she and the child she carries become infected and the communities, at the news of his contagion, go into lock-down.

Hannah is nearly six months pregnant, Sue is seven months into her pregnancy, and several other women are carrying babies too.

As Duke recovers, he finds the Army is still in place and helping everyone it can, and the Elders are still unable to achieve even the simplest of things. Coast Town looks to be thriving again with the new influx of people but as always, trouble is just around the corner and new horror surfaces.

Just when things looks good for the survivor’s, just as they begin to grasp skills forgotten, new evils and hard times rush to compound issues and make life a far greater struggle than it already was. The Death wiped out 90% of Mankind; illness and disease took even more.

Those that lived through it, instead of banding together, seem unable to change their ways and people find they still have to fight Mankind’s greatest enemy, Mankind itself.

Book Three – The Gates Of Hell

3- book 3_360x600

This instalment begins six hours after Duke Woods, AKA The Woodman, has decided he must leave Coast Town.

If he leaves, they stand a chance of negotiation with the small army coming their way and he gets to go home to his family. If he stays, the army will want his head. He has to try and flee, regardless of how it looks to others.

The ‘reluctant hero in the making’, fights his way out with bow and arrow, and arrives home only to find his family in mortal danger. Then, in a twist of fate; Duke is taken prisoner and escorted to Dover Castle. There he has, under threat of death, to fight for his freedom and his sanity as the true horrors of a madman come to light. Seth Windsor is insane and out for blood, a truly bad concoction, and he will only be happy when Duke is forced to fight for his life.

Sue goes to other lands to start a new and joyful life whilst Coast Town burns; only to find the sweet talking man was really a serpent in disguise.

Duke fights evil time and again, fashioning himself unwittingly into a hero regardless of his wish to not be.

Years of peace follow, communities come together, trade together and grow, and a network of towns and villages live in harmony with the people of the woods. Harmony that is, until evil rears its ugly head once more in the form of feral kids linked to Seth Windsor. The Death is still out there, perhaps it always will be, and evil men still rampage across the lands too. The peace is shattered by these feral kids and a new terror from the north. Will peace ever really come to The Woodman?

Senator Horst is not all he seems to be and speaks with a serpents tongue. Marine Cobb goes AWOL and tells Duke what he already suspected, that Horst let the Ebola virus loose in the first place. Fighting for his life and the lives of those he loves, Duke must defeat the terror from the north and deal with Senator Horst whilst keeping his people together.

This fourth and final instalment gives the answers to who the people were that died at the start of book one, explains who unleashed the virus, modified it and why. Duke comes close to death, Sue at last finds happiness and Duke, Gould and Troy find out who lives on the forbidden isle.

Book Five – All Hell Broke Loose

5- book 5_400x600

Modified Ebola was created to wipe out the masses and cut down the numbers of humans on planet Earth. Three differing strains – due to natural mutation and the meddling of the mega-rich – has created a bleak world for those lucky enough to survive. This is book five in the saga and, whereas you might not have read books one – four, you can pick it up by jumping right in here. Life is peaceful once more, the newcomers are getting used to this way of life in southern England and Duke Woods is a dad again. Evil, however comes from across the Channel and threatens the very existence he has fought so hard to build. If the virus wasn’t bad enough this new terror rips the heart out of not just Coast Town but The Woodman too as this battle becomes personal and painful.

Amazon UK –

Book Six – Hell Hath No Fury

6- book 6_400x600

Three differing factions head for Duke’s Lands. All have different agendas, one wants to live in peace and be friends whilst another is happy to die for the cause just so long as The Woodman dies too, and the third faction – an eight hundred strong army – wishes for nothing more than total domination.

Attacked on different fronts, abandoned by The West and with his lands diminishing rapidly, Duke Woods has the fight of his life on his hands. It is a fight that will cost dearly, many people will die in battle and the return of The Death will take its share too.

Stretched to the limits of manpower and with the weather against them, the Marines and Fighting Men stand side by side with The Woodman and family in a fight to the death to save Coast Town. This is a win or lose-it- all battle to the death. Contains graphic violence and sexual content, not for the squeamish.

Book Tour Review: “The Edge Of Brilliance” by Susan Traugh

The Edge of Brilliance tour banner NEW

About The Book

the edge of brilliance cover

Goodreads Summary

Volatile and unstable, Amy stands at the precipice. Will she fall into the chaos and despair of insanity or ascend into brilliance and redemption?

Amy Miles is fifteen and crazy. Or, at least that’s her greatest fear. Her severe bipolar disorder, with its roller coaster manic and depressive episodes, is ruining her life. Yet in Amy’s mind it is accepting the pills and therapy—not the disease—that will brand her as ’crazy’.

When Amy lands in a residential psychiatric program, she befriends take-charge Mallory and the two create family and try to salvage the shards of their broken minds. There, Amy discovers that her illicit drug use has robbed her of her ability to dance and she is forced to weigh how hard she is willing to work to reclaim her lost talent and potential. But, despite a promising beginning, when Amy falls back into denial, the tragic consequences cannot be undone.

Amy is left to decide whether to give up altogether or accept her diagnosis and the tools she needs to battle her disease, to learn to dance again and forge a new and improved version of herself. Will she step up to the edge of her brilliance and shine?

Reader Advisory: This book contains strong language and also includes scenes involving drug use, rape, violence. This book also includes a frank exploration of mental illness and loss of autonomy.

Bookworm1102’s Review

The Edge of Brilliance is centered around a teenager named Amy Miles, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After one incident, before she realises what has happened, she is an inpatient in Green Acres, a residential psychiatric programme. She becomes firm friends with the girls in her room, especially Mallory. During her time here, she realises that the activity she most loves to do, dance, has been taken from her due to her use of illegal drugs.  Will Amy ever battle her disorder and learn to dance again, or will she fall further down her own hole of despair?

I liked this book. It gave me a strong sense of what happens to somebody who has a mental disorder. My heart went out to Amy, she went through so much pain and despair, that as the book went on, I was rooting for her to beat the programme.

The book is well written. I could imagine how it felt to be Amy at every stage of her life, I could feel how scared she was and how out of control she was. I could see Green Acres exactly as she described it. I only wish I could have found out how Amy was coping after the story ended.

Thank you to the publisher, Susan Traugh and YA Bound Book Tours for sending me a complimentary copy.
